When I was the Psychometrist (Psychoeducational consultant) for a large school board, I worked with an adorable 5-year-old boy who kept getting in trouble for pretending to be a superhero on the playground. He was imitating a famous TV superhero, and beating up smaller children! The other children weren't even doing anything to bother him; he was simply passionate with being a hero and doing what his superhero did. He seemed very confused when he got called in to see the principal. In fact, if I asked him what he ate for breakfast, he would tell me a violent, "heroic" story about Spiderman. Unfortunately, his beloved role model had taught him to use aggression to get power and attention. According to my research with various principals, children often get injured because children are imitating superheroes. In fact, a number of innocent children have been bullied to death because of violent, racist, sexist and homophobic behaviours that other children have learned from their heroes and role models. Wow! What a blast.
